What is a satoshi?
A satoshi — or just “sat” — is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after its pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. One Bitcoin divides into exactly 100,000,000 satoshis, the same way a dollar divides into 100 cents. Because a whole Bitcoin costs tens of thousands of dollars, thinking in sats makes everyday amounts practical: instead of saying you own 0.00025 BTC, you can simply say 25,000 sats. Sats are increasingly how Bitcoiners quote prices — a coffee might be “8,000 sats”, and “stacking sats” means accumulating Bitcoin in small, regular amounts. Pricing in sats also makes small transactions on the Lightning Network readable, where fees and payments are routinely just a few sats. This converter uses the live Bitcoin price, so the dollar value of your sats changes with the market — the sats themselves never change: 100,000 sats is always exactly 0.001 BTC.
