Bitcoin fees aren't a percentage of the amount you send — a $100 transfer and a $100 million transfer can cost exactly the same. You pay for the space your transaction occupies in a block, measured in virtual bytes (vBytes), multiplied by a rate in satoshis per vByte. That rate is set by an open auction: blocks hold a limited amount of data, arrive roughly every ten minutes, and when more people want in than a block can fit, whoever bids a higher sat/vB rate gets confirmed first. That's why fees swing from under a cent on a quiet Sunday to tens of dollars during a frenzy — the mempool, the waiting room of unconfirmed transactions, empties and fills with demand.

The practical levers are on your side. If you're not in a hurry, the economy rate usually confirms within hours at a fraction of the fastest price. Modern SegWit and Taproot addresses produce smaller transactions than legacy ones, so the same payment costs less.
