Here's how a disciplined perp trade actually looks, with numbers. Assume a $10,000 trading account and a hard rule: risk no more than 1% of the account — $100 — on any single trade.

The setup

  • Instrument: BTCUSDT perpetual on Binance
  • Direction: long, off a support retest with confirmation
  • Entry: $50,000
  • Stop loss: $49,000 (below the support structure — a 2% adverse move)
  • Target: $52,500 (prior resistance)

Position sizing — the part most people skip

Risk per unit: $50,000 − $49,000 = $1,000 per BTC. Account risk budget: $100. Position size: $100 ÷ $1,000 = 0.1 BTC, or $5,000 notional.

Notice what happened: the position size was determined by the stop distance and risk budget — not by leverage. Leverage only decides how much collateral I post. With 5x leverage, I post $1,000 margin for the $5,000 position. My liquidation price sits around $40,250 — far below my $49,000 stop, which is exactly where it should be. The stop loss is my risk management; liquidation should never be reachable in a properly structured trade.
